Winamac Town Council Asked to Consider Amending Golf Cart Ordinance

A Winamac resident came before the Town Council Monday night, to request an amendment to the Town’s golf cart ordinance.

Tony Calabrese mentioned that Pulaski County’s ordinance allows utility vehicles on the roads for business use. He asked the council members if they would consider making a change to the Town’s existing ordinance to allow for the use of UTVs.

He specifically mentioned that he recently purchased a Kubota that he wants to utilize for his landscaping business in the warmer months and to plow snow in the winter time.

Councilwoman Judy Heater asked for some clarification about the difference between the types of vehicles. She was informed that UTVs are typically larger and can go much faster.

Zellers added that he called officials at the County level and learned that their ordinance is the inverse of the Town’s. Pulaski County’s ordinance permits UTVs to be operated on county roads but prohibits golf carts, whereas Winamac’s ordinance allows golf carts but prohibits utility vehicles in town.

Town Attorney Justin Schramm weighed in on the matter, noting that these discussions are being held elsewhere. He stated that town council members in North Judson have also been asked to consider potential amendments to their golf cart ordinance. He explained that North Judson officials are waiting to see the results of Starke County’s updated ordinance before making any decisions.

Councilman Alvin Parish said that they have to be careful about “opening a can of worms” because they don’t want an influx of these kinds of vehicles operating in town. Councilwoman Heater mentioned that since the request relates to business, it is definitely worth considering.

Council President Tom Murray told Mr. Calabrese that the council would take it under advisement and get back to him.
