LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Warns Residents of Phone Scammer Posing as Deputy

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to be on the lookout for a phone scammer pretending to be one of its deputies. The Sheriff’s Office says several people have reported getting a call from someone claiming to be LaPorte County Sheriff’s Sergeant Tony Wallace. The caller reportedly tells people they’re in trouble for missing jury duty, but can pay a fine using “Green Dot” cards.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that it doesn’t conduct this type of business by phone and never demands payments by gift card or wire transfer. Any legitimate jury duty complaints would be served in document form by a deputy after being approved by a court.

Sheriff John Boyd encourages anyone who receives a suspicious phone call to report it to the Sheriff’s Office.
