Pulaski County Highway Department Seeks $20,000 Reimbursement for U.S. 421 Detour

The Pulaski County Highway Department hopes to get $20,000 from the Indiana Department of Transportation to repair a short section of County Road 300 North. The county commissioners approved a contract with INDOT Monday.

It seeks a reimbursement for damage caused by the increase in traffic while U.S. 421 was closed for a bridge replacement, according to Highway Superintendent Terry Ruff. “We’re not a hundred percent sure how much money we’ll get, but that’s what we turned in, was $20,000,” he explained. “So that would give us enough to do that half-mile from 1550 to 421.”

Ruff said the wear and tear on 300 North ended up being relatively minor. “For the amount of traffic that we had – and that’s the one that’s got the open ditch right on the north side of it, I’m surprised it held up as good as it did,” he said. “It’s just cracked up and stuff, and if we can get this money around, we’re going to try to resurface it yet this fall.”

During Monday’s meeting, Ruff also presented the commissioners with the results of a recent round of underwater bridge inspections. He said no major issues were found.
