Grant Approval for Hamlet Comprehensive Plan Delayed Until January

Funding for Hamlet’s comprehensive plan will take a little longer to come through. Town officials had hoped to have a $39,600 planning grant approved by the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs this month. But Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts told the town council last week that won’t happen until January, according to Kankakee-Iroquois Regional Planning Commission Executive Director Edwin Buswell.

The town council hasn’t finalized the required Fair Housing and Drug and Alcohol ordinances. Council members are expected to do that next month. Meanwhile, Pitts said OCRA is also asking for more information about Hamlet’s sewer and water departments, including the number of hookups and the systems’ capacity. Wastewater Operator Jason Clemons said he needed some more guidance about how to answer those questions.

Communities around Starke County are creating or updating comprehensive plans, in preparation for a potential regional Stellar Community application.
