A graduating senior student from Knox Community High School has been chosen as the 2019 Starke County Community Foundation Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.
Madeline Krueger will receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to the Indiana college or university of her choice. She’ll also get a $900 yearly stipend to cover the costs of required books and equipment.
According to a press release from the Starke County Community Foundation, Madeline plans to study Civil Engineering at Purdue University West Lafayette.
Madeline is the daughter of Judith Ringle and Ronald Krueger. She has participated in musicals throughout her high school career and served as Student Body Secretary on the Student Council. She has also been involved in National Honor Society, Science Club, Freshmen Mentor Program, and the Hoosier Northern Academic Conference, among other activities.
Additionally, the Scholar has been on the tennis team for four years and was awarded the All-Conference Academic Award. She is a 10-year 4-H member and has served as a 4-H Camp Counselor throughout high school. Madeline has also been involved in other community activities and has been an active volunteer.
The Starke County Scholarship Committee scored 33 blinded applications on academic performance, volunteer and work experience, school activities and honors, as well as essays.
Five semi-finalists were invited to write an impromptu essay and have a personal interview with the scholarship committee. The students selected as semi-finalists for the scholarship included Madison Land and Andrew VanAsdall of Knox Community High School, Macy Reimbold of North Judson-San Pierre High School, and Kennedy Ash of Oregon-Davis High School.
The committee then submitted the finalists to Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) for the final selection of the recipient. ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents thirty regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.
Officials report that the primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana and to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities.
Another goal of the program is to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, not-for-profit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.
