Motorists are reminded to be extra cautious driving, as this morning’s conditions led to multiple vehicles sliding off the road.
According to officials at the Starke County Sheriff’s Department, dispatch received calls of incidents all over the county, including one at 8 and 23 and others on U.S. 30, U.S. 421 and U.S. 35.
While dispatch had no reports of major injuries, drivers are asked to be careful as they traverse slick streets around this time of year. Here are some tips from the Indiana Department of Transportation to keep in mind before you get behind the wheel.
One thing to remember is that it is never okay to go above the posted speed limit. Speeding can not only result in a costly ticket but it also puts you and others in danger so drivers are encouraged give themselves plenty of time to get to their destination safely.
When it comes to braking; brake early, slowly and correctly. Never slam on the brakes.
It’s also important to recognize that it takes extra time and extra distance to bring your car to a stop on a slick street so keep a safe distance between your vehicle and others on the road.
INDOT officials also suggest that drivers should avoid abrupt steering maneuvers and says motorists should avoid using cruise control. When merging into traffic, take it slow as sudden movements can cause your vehicle to slide.
Be alert and aware of what is going on around you. According to INDOT, actions by other vehicles will alert you to problems more quickly and can give you that split-second of extra time to react safely.
