A motorist with some apparent brake issues had a run in with a gas pump at the Phillips 66 on the corner of US 35 and SR 8 in Knox Wednesday evening.
Emergency personnel was notified about the incident shortly before 5 p.m. Knox Center-Township Fire Department responded to the scene along with the Knox Police Department and Starke County EMS.
Though EMS was on the scene, no one was transported to the hospital and no injuries were reported.
According to Fire Chief Kenny Pfost, a driver of a red truck was traveling down Culver Road (SR 8) toward Heaton Street (US 35) when he reportedly realized his brakes were not functioning.
Police Chief Harold Smith noted that the driver attempted to exit the roadway before entering the intersection by turning north onto the curb at the Osborn’s Mini Mart, causing the truck to flip and subsequently hit a nearby pump.
Chief Pfost reports that the pump was knocked off its base but there was only a minimal amount of fuel spillage.
He said firefighters contained the fuel and worked to keep it from inching over into a nearby storm drain. He noted that they also applied a layer of foam to cut down on emissions and prevent any chance of ignition.
