A Hamlet property owner is exploring the possibility of adding either a storage facility or more apartments in town. Andrew Spite told the town council Wednesday that he’s considering a couple potential uses for the land adjacent to his apartment building on Indiana Avenue, between Starke Street and the fire station.
“We talked about the cargo containers for storage,” he explained. “Of course, that idea will not fly because the county prohibits it. So I switched to permanent storage units, either that – which is a 20-unit, 10-by-20, so the footprint fits within that acreage there – or 12 studio apartments in a line, one story, running down the same footprint.”
Spite asked council members about the process for getting a building permit for the potential development. They noted that the storage facility would require a variance, but the apartments would not, since the land is zoned residential. There would also be a more involved state permitting process. Additionally, Council President Dave Kesvormas said he’d want to make sure the town’s water and sewer infrastructure could handle the apartment development or if more capacity would be needed.
But the town officials told Spite they’d be willing to consider either idea, if he decides to move forward.
