Projections about possible population changes within the state of Indiana could impact how much additional money will be funneled into municipalities in 2020.
When the Knox City Council met last Tuesday, Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston shared a letter that he received from the Auditor of the State.
He read from the letter, “Early estimates of the population adjustment on the MVH which is the Motor Vehicle Highway and cigarette tax distributions could result in an 8 percent decrease from Fiscal Year ‘19 distributions to cities and towns, assuming revenue collections are constant.”
Houston mentioned that the adjustment is expected to affect all cities and towns. He also noted that the cigarette tax distribution is actually pretty minimal to begin with.
Clerk-Treasurer Houston explained that since the 2020 budget was already created before that letter was received, the City’s budget will remain unchanged for now. However, he did recommend keeping an eye on the distributions when they come in.
