Knox Mayor Provides Update about Owner Occupied Rehab Grant Program

Knox Mayor Dennis Estok provided an update about the Owner Occupied Rehabilitation Grant program when City Council members met for their first meeting of the month.

Estok shared, “We will be bidding out the first 5 houses for work to be done.”

He stated that the bid packets for interested contractors are available in the Mayor’s Office and a pre-bid meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 26th. The bids are expected to be opened at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 2nd.

Officials held a call out meeting about the Owner Occupied Rehab Grant opportunity back in April and previously noted that a total of 10 homes would be assisted through the program.

With the first five houses ready to go to bid and three more getting close, there are only two homes remaining where officials have hit a bit of a snag.

Estok explained, “The last two applicants, we’re having problems with HUD accepting them because a part of their properties are in the flood plain and it stipulates that anything cannot be in the flood plain.”

He continued, “So we’re trying to get them to accept them because both of those property owners really need work done on their house and they cannot afford to get it done.”

The Mayor said if they’re unable to get the remaining two houses eligible for the program, they’ll have to seek out two more homeowners which will prolong the process.
