KMS Students Start ‘The Redskins Closet’ to Provide Necessities to Those in Need

A handful of Knox Middle Schoolers are making an effort to assist fellow students with a special project entitled ‘The Redskins Closet’.

Bethany Barnes, Allison Dunfee, and Kyleigh Norem, seventh grade students in Amie Flora’s Honors Language Arts class, reached out about the initiative. They noted that the purpose of this program is to provide toiletries, clothing and other items that children in need could use.

The students explained that they were inspired to do this project after starting a food share table during lunch time. They commented that if students could use extra food they probably needed other items as well so they wanted to ensure that no one had to go without basic necessities.

The Redskins Closet will be located in a room within the Middle School office but will be a resource that is available to Knox Community School students at the elementary and high school levels as well.

Mrs. Flora mentioned that the room is in a private and discreet location. Students who wish to access it just have to stop by the front desk and someone will open the door for them.

The project has already garnered community support, with $220 donated at the Starke County Commissioners meeting Monday night and a local business owner pledging to contribute canned goods. Dental needs have also been donated and teachers within the school corporation have already started sending in items.

Additional donations and monetary contributions are welcome to help keep The Redskins Closet stocked with items. People can bring donations directly to the KMS Office.

Some items that are needed include:

-Toiletries (minus dental)-soaps, shampoo, deodorant, hair brushes, toilet paper/tissue, etc.
-Food that requires no preparation
-Socks
-Jeans
-Sweatshirts
-Coats
-Hats/gloves
-Redskin apparel
-Gym shoes in good shape
-Blankets
-Backpacks
-Trapper keepers
-Reusable bags
