The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office’s recent overtime holiday patrols resulted in 258 traffic stops and 126 citations. The 24-day mobilization was funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as part of the larger “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It to Live It” campaigns.
The Sheriff’s Office issued 78 tickets for seatbelt infractions, 23 for driver’s license violations, and nine for speeding. Police say the goal was to keep motorists safe during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
There were more than 80 alcohol-related driving fatalities in Indiana last year, according to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, and more than half of the passengers killed in crashes weren’t wearing seatbelts.
