Town of North Judson Faces Over $10,000 Charge for Municipal General Election

The cost of the 2019 Municipal General Election was discussed when North Judson Town council members met Monday night. It was noted that cost came in a little over $10,915.

Clerk-Treasurer Andrew Rowe said he received some information from Starke County Clerk Bernadette Welter-Manuel when he spoke to her earlier in the year.

Rowe told council members, “Speaking with Bernadette, the County [Council] had waived Knox’s previously and she mentioned asking [them] to do the same this year.”

Clerk-Treasurer Rowe noted that there was an indication that municipalities would need pay for elections in the future but he said he felt it was worth bringing up to the [Council] since an exception was reportedly made recently.

He explained, “They did state that we would be responsible for this in coming elections but with last year’s elections they waived it so the thought is that they would waive ours happening this year.”

Rowe continued, “Next election if that’s the policy for all municipalities, cities, and towns, then so be it but for right now I would recommend taking it to the [Council] to ask if they’ll waive this.”

Councilman Josh Brown noted that he felt there could be a way to cut down on costs in the future if they reduce the number of polling places that are open.

He stated, “We had three polling places for 272 people that, at least I think, is a little overkill”

Councilwoman Wendy Hoppe noted that an effort is being made county-wide to consolidate polling places and bring in vote centers.

Clerk-Treasurer Rowe commented that arrangements will be made so at least one or two Town representatives can attend a meeting so the request to waive the election fee can be formally submitted for consideration.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The original version of this story mentioned that Clerk-Treasurer Andrew Rowe was informed that the County Commissioners should be contacted about waiving the election costs. However, he has since reached out stating that he accidentally misspoke. He added that since the County Council members are responsible for fiduciary matters, that is the governing body that needs to be contacted. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate the correction.
