Hamlet’s latest round of the 50/50 sidewalk replacement program has failed to get any applicants so far.
Earlier this month, the town council decided to start taking applications after a few property owners had expressed interest, but as of Wednesday’s town council meeting, no one had signed up.
Under the program, the town splits the cost of sidewalk upgrades with interested property owners. During Wednesday’s meeting, Council Member Brian Earnest stressed that filling out an application simply lets the town proceed with getting a cost estimate. “They just apply for it; it doesn’t mean you have to go through with it,” Earnest explained. “That way, they can apply and get an estimate, and then we know. And they can decide if they want to go through with it or not once they get that estimate.”
Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts said she had heard from a South Bend contractor interested in doing the work. Property owners have until February 26 to apply for Hamlet’s 50/50 sidewalk program.
