A semi driver faces multiple citations, after police say he crashed into irrigation equipment that was being moved on State Road 2 Tuesday afternoon. LaPorte County Sheriff’s Deputies say they had blocked traffic in both directions on State Road 2 at County Road 600 East, when an eastbound semi drove around the stopped traffic and into a turn lane, narrowly missing a marked police vehicle.
The truck reportedly collided with the irrigation tower, forcing it into the other police vehicle while a deputy was inside. No one was injured, though.
The driver of the semi, Enrique Rodriguez, 26, of Chicago, reportedly told deputies that he was unable to stop. Rodriguez was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way to an emergency vehicle, unsafe lane movement, and improper lane usage on a three or more-lane roadway.
Commercial vehicle enforcement officers later determined that the semi-tractor-trailer combination was about 20,000 pounds over the permitted weight. Rodriguez was then issued an overweight citation, his oversize/overweight permit was revoked, and the semi-tractor and trailer were taken out of service for insufficient brakes.
