Knox School Board Gets Update on Donations, Grants

A Knox High School program that pairs special needs students with buddies in the general ed population has gotten a funding boost for one of its activities. The school board Tuesday accepted a $700 Target Field Trip Grant. That will help with the cost of tickets for the Best Buddies program’s upcoming trip to see a live production of The Lion King in South Bend.

Meanwhile, Elementary School Principal Michelle Tarnow reported that her school got $350 from the Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation for supplies for the nurse’s office. “She’s housing and purchasing toiletries, lice kits – they’re very expensive, and some of our families who can’t afford them, she’s going to be able to supply those to them – just other kind of toiletry things. So that was great,” Tarnow said.

The elementary school is also getting 300 bags of dirt, thanks to Lowe’s and Shelly Kemble. “We have so many spring projects and Mother’s Day projects and planting, and Lowe’s was ready to get rid of all this dirt, and Shelly’s always looking for a good deal for us,” Tarnow explained. “And so that was a donation, and they’re housing it until it gets a little closer for teachers to come and grab and use. So we’re really thankful for that.”

At Knox Middle School, Principal Jake Skelly said the Knox VFW and the Cheryl Welter Foundation have given funds to help students in the family and consumer science program with the cost of supplies.
