The Winamac Town Council last week agreed to hire Peerless Midwest for the abandonment of an unneeded well. The company submitted the lower of the two quotes the town received, at just under $5,000.
Water and Street Superintendent Jeremy Beckner said the town will be able to keep the pump and other equipment. The parts could be used in the town’s other old well, which will remain in place as a backup.
Council members also took action last week to help the town keep better track of its water. They agreed to buy a water meter for the fire station from Keyence for just under $3,800. The company submitted the lower of two quotes.
Beckner stressed that the town won’t bill the fire department for the water, but it does have to be accounted for. He said there are other places, like the park, that could also use meters in certain places, but in those cases, he could use meters the town already has in stock.
