Eastern Pulaski to Survey Middle, High School Students on Vaping Perceptions

To try to address concerns about vaping, Eastern Pulaski school officials are seeking students’ input.

Superintendent Dara Chezem told the school board Monday that school officials have put together an optional and anonymous survey for middle and high school students. “It is not even something that they will submit on here that tracks email or any identifying information from the students, but it will help us in educating our students and hopefully preventing future vaping or providing some support for students,” Chezem explained.

Teacher Elaina Sutton is helping to oversee the survey. She said it asks students about their attitudes toward and experience with tobacco, whether it be smoking, vaping, or chewing tobacco. “Basically, my goal is to find out what kind of problem we have here, find out, hopefully, where they’re getting them from – which is harder for them now, since the age is 21 – and also just to find out what their perceptions are of what the usage is in our school and the health drawbacks,” Sutton said.

She stresses that her goal is not to get kids in trouble, and she’s using an outside website to reduce the perception that responses can be tracked.
