Knox High School students’ grade point averages will look a little different starting this fall. The school is switching from a six-point scale to the more typical four-point scale, according to Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart.
“We were getting calls from colleges and universities asking us what 6.0 – like if a student had a 5.3 GPA, what does that really mean?” Reichhart explains. “And so I think this’ll be a lot clearer and understandable for both parents and students and also for universities and colleges.”
Reichhart says the change was recommended by incoming high school principal Glenn Barnes. All of the current academic standings will stay the same, according to Reichhart, and parents and students will have a chance to verify that the GPA was converted correctly. The superintendent says the school board expressed support for the change during last week’s meeting, but no formal action was required.
The GPA isn’t the only thing being changed. The start and end times of the school day have been adjusted at the middle and high schools, according to Reichhart. The elementary school day will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. Starting this fall, Knox Middle School will be in session from 7:50 a.m. to 3:10 p.m., and Knox High School will start at 7:45 a.m. and end at 3:05 p.m.
