Town of Hamlet will be reviewing its golf cart ordinance, after some concerns were received by Town Marshal Clint Norem. “I don’t know what’s going on,” Norem told the town council Wednesday. “We never really had complaints previously. We’ve gotten like two or three in the last couple weeks.”
Norem said some of the biggest concerns include whether or not children who are too young to legally drive a car are actually prohibited from driving a golf cart and whether liability insurance is required.
Council President Dave Kesvormas pointed out the importance of having a clear definition of a golf cart to begin with. “There’s somebody rolling around with the side-by-sides,” he said. “We had that issue a year or two ago. In some areas, we decipher the difference between a John Deere Gator versus a golf cart, and some places say that there’s no difference between the two. Other places, there is.”
Kesvormas said there’s also been a report about someone driving a golf cart into the Town Park. He suggested posting signs prohibiting all motor vehicles in the park, except for power wheelchairs.
In the end, Hamlet officials agreed to review the town’s ordinance, compare it to the one used by Knox, and see if it would be worth making any changes.
