LaPorte County Police Arrest Serious Violent Felon for Alleged Firearm Possession

A LaPorte man was arrested after sheriff’s deputies say they found a handgun during a traffic stop Friday morning. A LaPorte County deputy says he was following a speeding vehicle on westbound U.S. 20, when it suddenly braked and turned north onto County Road 300 East without giving the proper turn signal.

During the traffic stop, police say they found a loaded Smith and Wesson handgun magazine and then a Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun along with another loaded magazine in another part of the vehicle.

The driver, Zackery A. Padgett, 27, is accused of the Level 4 felony of possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.

He was taken to the LaPorte County Jail.
