A proposed solar farm development will be the focus of a public hearing held by the Pulaski County Board of Zoning Appeals tonight. A company called Mammoth Solar is seeking permission to build solar arrays on more than 4,500 acres of farmland. Tonight, the BZA will take comments on Mammoth’s request for a special exception.
Pulaski County officials have been publicly discussing the interest in solar development for more than a year. In 2019, the county updated its solar development regulations in preparation. That’s when county officials required that proposed commercial developments have to go before the BZA for a public hearing and special exception.
County officials note that even if the BZA approves the special exception, there are still several steps before the project would qualify for a building permit. Among other things, economic development, drainage, and road use and maintenance agreements would have to be finalized.
Those attending tonight’s hearing will be required to wear a mask, unless health reasons prevent them from doing so. Attendees may have to wait in an overflow area or outside, if the room reaches capacity.
Tonight’s Pulaski County BZA meeting starts at 6:00 EDT in the Pulaski County Highway Garage in Winamac.
