The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is warning motorists of someone pretending to be a police officer. Officers say a woman reported being pulled over on U.S. 20 Thursday morning by a man driving a light-colored Ford Focus or Toyota Prius with red and blue flashing lights.
A white man about six feet to six-feet-two-inches tall, wearing a black t-shirt, pants, and baseball cap, along with a mask with the Michigan City Police Department logo, reportedly got out of the car and made contact with the woman. But after speaking with him, the woman apparently became suspicious. She told police that she refused to give him any of the requested documents, and he went back to his car and left.
Anyone with information about the man or the vehicle he was driving is asked to email Deputy Austin Epple at aepple@lcso.in.gov. The Sheriff’s Office notes that any police officer must either be wearing a uniform or driving a marked police vehicle to conduct a traffic stop. Anyone who gets pulled over by someone who they think may not be a real police officer is encouraged to call 911 immediately.
