Pulaski County Officials Address Beetle Problem in Courthouse Restroom

Pulaski County is working to resolve a pest problem in the courthouse restrooms. Maintenance Director Mia Salyers told the county commissioners last week that an insect control specialist was recently brought in to spray all the county buildings.

She said one of the basement restrooms was found to have powderpost beetles in the paneling, but that wood couldn’t be sprayed because it had been painted. The commissioners agreed to let the Maintenance Department remove the paneling, to prevent the beetles from going into the rest of the courthouse’s woodwork.

Salyers said the restroom’s wall will be left bare until the insect control person comes back to spray. Then, the paneling may be replaced. The basement restrooms were renovated in 2017, as part of a larger effort to make the courthouse more ADA-compliant.

Salyers also told the commissioners she’s looking to buy an electrostatic cleaner, to sanitize offices if COVID-19 is detected. She offered to have a sales representative give a demonstration at their next meeting. Commissioner Mike McClure also suggested looking into what the schools are using.
