Alcohol Suspected As Factor in Off-Road Vehicle Crash That Killed Knox Resident

Indiana Conservation Officers have released the name of the person killed in Sunday’s off-road vehicle crash. Officers say it happened just before 6:00 p.m. along State Road 10 near the Bass Lake Beach.

Witnesses told officers that a side-by-side style ORV was heading south on State Road 10, when it failed to negotiate a turn at a high rate of speed. The vehicle reportedly went off the road and rolled over, ejecting both the operator and the passenger. Officers say neither of them was wearing a helmet or seatbelts.

The passenger, Misty Staton, 39, of Knox, was pronounced dead at the scene. The operator, Dalton Minix, 28, was taken to Starke Hospital with a head injury.

The crash remains under investigation, but Conservation Officers believe alcohol may have been a factor. All findings will be sent to the Starke County Prosecutor’s Office.

Conservation Officers remind residents that off-road vehicles are prohibited from state highways.
