Knox City Council Clarifies Penalty for Violating Park Hours of Operation

Knox city ordinances no longer refer to being caught in a city park after hours as a misdemeanor, but it’s still a $25 fine. The city council adjusted the ordinance language Tuesday, at the recommendation of City Attorney Autumn Ferch.

“There was some language in the original ordinance that said, ‘If you are found in the park after hours, you’re deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and your punishment will be a fine of $25.’ That language does not match up,” she explained. “And so the language was changed to the new language that says, ‘If you’re found in the park, you’re found to be in violation of the ordinance and just subject to the fine.’ You’re not guilty of anything; you’re just subject to a $25 fine.”

Individuals may contest the fine in Knox City Court. Knox city parks are closed from 10:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
