The owner of a pair of Knox properties now faces additional penalties, after city officials say she failed to complete repairs by this month’s deadline.
Director of Building and Code Compliance Kenny Pfost told the board of works last week that nothing had been done to bring the house at 204 West Bender Street into compliance with his order. “September 11, the civil penalty of $2,500 went into effect, and I mailed that out to her,” he explained.
City Attorney Autumn Ferch noted that if owner Lucia Valladares fails to pay the penalty, a special assessment will be attached on the taxes. Meanwhile, a judicial review hearing for a garage on that property is scheduled for this morning in Starke Circuit Court.
At her other property at 6 North Pearl Street, Pfost said an additional $1,000 penalty took effect September 11. That’s on top of an existing $5,000 penalty. The board had called for the home’s demolition back in 2016 later tried to give Valladares a chance to fix the issues.
