Some potential sites for Yellow River kayak launches were recently discussed with the Starke County Park Board. The park board has hired Mark Wilson with Jones Petrie Rafinski to conduct a feasibility study.
He felt that County Roads 700 and 1100 East would be good locations. “It’s seems like it’s two different rivers here,” Wilson explained. “You’ve got a lot of gradient, you’ve got a lot of meandering in the eastern half. The western half has very flat gradient and very straight lines.”
Wilson also recommended improvements near Wythogan Park in Knox, but said he hadn’t come up with a good location between there and the Kankakee River. He hadn’t made any cost estimates, yet.
Wilson also said he’s spoken with officials in LaPorte and Marshall Counties. He noted that there’s a kayak launch in Plymouth, and Marshall County is exploring the possibility of adding another one during an upcoming bridge replacement.
