The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is taking aim at unlicensed handguns. Officers say they recovered two guns in separate traffic stops on Sunday.
Dustin G. Carpenter, 29, of Selmer, Tennessee, was taken into custody after police say they found a handgun after pulling him over for disregarding a stop sign at County Roads 200 North and 100 West Sunday morning.
That afternoon, police arrested Demario A. Beatty, 24, of South Bend, for allegedly carrying a handgun without a license with a prior conviction and never receiving a license. Officers say he was also wanted by authorities in Fulton and Tipton counties. Police say they pulled Beatty over after he sped past a police vehicle while heading east on U.S. 20 and twice failed to signal a lane change.
LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Captain Derek Allen credits proactive traffic enforcement for the arrests and says deputies will continue to seek out and remove weapons from those who are unlicensed or not permitted to have them.
