The West Central School Corporation’s enrollment is lower than what school officials were expecting. “Our student enrollment count in the district is at 672, which is lower than we had projected,” Superintendent Dan Zylstra explains. “And based on that, we did have to make some tweaks in the budget.”
As advertised, the West Central School Corporation’s 2021 budget totaled just over $9.4 million. Almost $4.7 million of that would be the Education Fund, where teacher salaries are budgeted, with an Operations Fund of just over $3.4 million.
Since the number of students determines how much Education Fund money a school corporation gets, Zylstra says the budget had to be adjusted before last week’s final adoption. “We had to make some adjustments in how your Operations Fund flows from your Education Fund,” he says. “You can balance those funds out to make sure you have sufficient revenue to cover your educational costs as projected.”
During last week’s meeting, the West Central School Board also approved the capital projects and bus replacement plans.
