Residents Urged Help Put a Stop to Domestic Violence during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic Violence Awareness Month has taken on a new level of urgency in 2020. As the pandemic has kept people at home, domestic violence-related fatalities are up 86 percent compared to this time last year, according to statistics from domestic violence attorney in Arizona – Canyon State Law.

As Domestic Violence Awareness Month comes to a close, Starke County Prosecutor Leslie Baker is offering some tips to help identify and put an end to it. Some signs are easier to spot, like bruises and unexplained injuries. Others can be less noticeable, especially when it comes to emotional abuse, things like abrupt personality changes, loss of self-esteem, and constantly checking in with their partner.

Baker says if you think someone you know may be suffering from abuse, talk to the person, share your concerns, and don’t be afraid to alert the authorities. For more ways you can help, visit the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s website at icadvinc.org.
