The SCILL Center’s new Fire & Rescue Program has gotten a boost, thanks to the Town of North Judson. Back in September, the town council agreed to let the program use a 1979 Ford fire truck that the North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department has been unable to sell, as long as the SCILL Center would maintain it. On Monday, Fire Chief Joe Leszek told the town council Monday that the paperwork was being finalized, and the fire department planned to hand the truck over to the SCILL Center this week.
It’s one of a few educational efforts underway at the fire department. Leszek said it will soon be getting an inflatable training house. It will be an interactive way for children to learn about the importance of fire prevention.
The purchase was spearheaded by the department’s auxiliary, which raised the necessary money through fundraising and grant applications. Leszek said North Judson-Wayne Township will also lend the training house out to other nearby departments, to help educate as many kids as possible. He added that firefighters are really proud of the auxiliary and the work that they put in, and the town council agreed to send them a thank-you letter.
