North Judson-San Pierre Junior/Senior High School will switch to virtual learning and suspend extracurricular activities next week.
Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin says students in grades seven through 12 will attend class in-person tomorrow, December 11, before moving to virtual learning on Monday. The junior/senior high school will remain virtual through the end of the semester next Friday. North Judson-San Pierre Elementary School will continue with in-person learning.
Zupin says the change is due to a sharp rise in the number of COVID-19 cases. More than 50 students are out because they tested positive, were in close contact with someone who had, or are choosing to finish the semester at home. Several more are out due to other illnesses. Zupin says that the majority of these cases are at the junior/senior high school, and at this point, the impact of COVID-19 at the elementary school is low enough to allow in-person learning to continue.
The superintendent is also calling a “time out” on all athletics and extracurricular activities from December 11 to December 18. She notes that two winter sports teams are currently in extended quarantines, and she hopes the break will let the students, staff, and community “limit their exposure and head into the holiday season feeling healthy and safe.”
For now, the plan is to resume in-person learning for all grade levels on January 5.
