South Bend Man Arrested following LaPorte County Police Chase

A South Bend man was arrested, following a LaPorte County police chase Saturday morning. Sheriff’s deputies say they tried to pull over a westbound pickup truck in the 3500 block of East State Road 2, after a registration check reportedly alerted officers that the female owner was a wanted person. The male driver allegedly refused to stop and led officers on a chase through LaPorte.

A female passenger got out of the truck near the intersection of Factory and Boston streets, before it reportedly sped off again. Police say the driver, Travis E. Hatchel, 35, eventually tried to flee on foot, but was quickly apprehended near the intersection of Division and Henry streets.

He’s accused of resisting law enforcement, possession of methamphetamine, driving while suspended, and reckless driving. Officers say the female passenger was not the wanted person. She reportedly gave a statement, and then was given a ride home.
