Eight-Hour Standoff Ends Peacefully, According to LaPorte City Police

An eight-hour standoff in LaPorte ended peacefully Wednesday, according to city police. A City of LaPorte press release says it began at 2:00 p.m., when the LaPorte County Fugitive Apprehension Street Team and the City of LaPorte Detectives Bureau tried to serve arrest and search warrants in the 200 block of Belden Street.

Officers say the suspect barricaded themselves in the home and threatened to harm themselves if officers entered. Neighbors were notified for their safety, and many evacuated.

Negotiators from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene, and police say the individual exited the home peacefully after about eight hours. The suspect was then taken to the hospital for evaluation. The person’s name was not provided, but the city promised to release more information at a later time.

City Police Chief Paul Brettin credits the teamwork among the departments for bringing the “situation to a peaceful close with no injuries to the suspect, citizens or officers.”
