The Town of Hamlet has apparently fallen behind in updating its wellhead protection plan. Water Operator Jason Cox recently told the town council that the town got a letter from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, notifying them of a violation.
“2013, it looks like the plan was approved,” Cox explained. “Every five years, you’ve got to give an update. So in 2018, there was supposed to be an updated plan, and we never issued one, I guess.”
2018 was the year Cox took over as Hamlet’s water operator. He said he’s looking into what steps have to be taken to remedy the situation. Cox noted that wellhead protection plans generally involve a lot of paperwork, but he was hopeful that the old plan could be updated relatively easily.
The plan outlines the steps the town takes to protect its drinking water from potential contamination.
