West Central School Board Moves $50,000 from Rainy Day Fund to Education Fund

Declining enrollment is prompting the West Central School Corporation to dip into its Rainy Day Fund. Superintendent Dan Zylstra says the school board agreed this month to transfer $50,000 from the Rainy Day Fund to the Education Fund.

“We’re not in trouble in our Education Fund, but we wanted to make sure that we put a little money in there from the savings so that we would have it if we needed it,” Zylstra explains.

The Education Fund is where teacher salaries are budgeted. It gets its money from the state, based on a school corporation’s number of students.

“Our biggest challenges are going to continue to be managing a declining enrollment as the population of our county declines,” Zylstra adds. “But I think the administration, the board, the school, we’ve done a nice job.”

Zylstra says West Central remains in good financial shape with sufficient cash balances. He gave an update during the annual board of finance meeting.
