Winamac Officials Discuss Wellhead Protection Plan

The Town of Winamac is working on a plan to protect its drinking water. Town officials discussed a required wellhead protection plan during a public hearing last month.

They identified a few things that may be worth keeping an eye on as potential contaminant sources, such as some wells that may be unused but not actually abandoned. Peerless Midwest also noted a chemical spill in the area in 1994 and other potential hazards like the risk of more spills on State Road 14, agricultural products like pesticides and herbicides, and residential wells and septic systems.

Town officials are also encouraged to have a public outreach strategy. They noted that they’ve offered tours of their facilities in the past and visited local schools to discuss the water cycle.
