The North Judson-San Pierre High School gym will get some upgrades starting next month. The school board recently approved contracts for a new floor that will be done by floor marking contractors, bleachers, and the reconfiguration of the basketball backboards, at the recommendation of Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin.
“The coordinating of all of this is what is key: the bleachers, the floor, the backboard, and then we’re going to do some painting,” Zupin told board members. “So all of that will be coordinated. So that would begin in March, hopefully finish by the time summer rolls around.”
Foster Floors will oversee the floor project for a cost of just over $204,000, while the Lee Company will install the bleachers for more than $563,000. Zupin explained that the new bleachers will be wood, rather than plastic, and the gym will lose some seating, due to updated ADA requirements. Those two items were bid through the cooperative purchasing agent Sourcewell. The Lee Company was also selected through a separate bidding process to redo the backboards and reconfigure the cross courts for just over $71,000.
Zupin said the cost of the work will be covered by a general obligation bond, with no increase to the debt payment or tax rate. That bonding capacity was freed up, when the bus garage project was incorporated into the lease-rental bond being used for the elementary school upgrades.
