A living piece of space exploration history will be celebrated with a fun run in Downtown Knox. On the northwest corner of the Starke County Courthouse Square is a sycamore tree, grown from a seed that orbited the Earth on the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1988. Seedlings were given to each Indiana county, and Starke County’s was planted on the courthouse lawn in April of 1990.
Now, Knox Main Street United plans to rededicate the tree with a commemorative marker on Saturday, April 24 at 9:30 a.m. That will be followed by a Space Race, a 3K or 5K fun run through Wythogan Park and Downtown Knox, starting at 10:00 a.m. More information about how to register can be found on the Knox Main Street United Facebook page.
It’s the first major event for Knox Main Street United, a nonprofit group set up to pursue a Main Street designation and help revitalize the downtown area.
