LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office to Take Part in School Bus Safety Enforcement Campaign

Police will be on the lookout for school bus stop-arm violations this spring. For the next couple of months, more than 200 law enforcement agencies around Indiana will be taking part in the Stop Arm Violation Enforcement program (SAVE). Vehicles traveling in both directions are required to stop for a bus with its red lights flashing and stop-arm extended, unless they’re on the other side of a median.

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office says its deputies will be positioned along bus routes in the morning and afternoon. They’ll also be watching for other unsafe driving behavior, like distracted driving and speeding.

The SAVE program was developed by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute in 2019. Funding for the overtime patrols comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
