Starke County employees will either have to use a county-owned vehicle for county business or show proof of business insurance for their personal vehicle.
A motion to that effect was approved by the county commissioners Monday. Auditor Rachel Oesterreich felt that employees should be required to use a county-owned car for trips inside the county, due to liability concerns. But Commissioner Mark Gourley said that while that should be the default option, he wasn’t comfortable with that being the only option.
Oesterreich noted that some other counties she’s contacted require employees to use a county vehicle if it’s available, but others do give employees the option to use their own, as long as they provide their license and proof of insurance including business coverage. County Attorney Marty Lucas felt that option was a good approach, and the commissioners approved it unanimously.
