Knox Schools May Cut Teaching Positions due to Declining Enrollment

The Knox Community School Corporation could soon be cutting teaching positions.

“We will discuss at our next board meeting a possible reduction in force with some of our teachers here at KCSC, due to enrollment decreasing over the last couple of years,” says Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart. He plans to present a recommendation to the school board at its May 4 meeting.

But there are some promising numbers for the future. Reichhart says 85 kids are signed up for next year’s kindergarten class so far. “Last year, we were at 79 at this point in time, so we’re running a little bit ahead of last year, which is good news for us,” he adds.

More than 50 students are signed up for preschool. Reichhart says Indiana Department of Education representatives have okayed the classrooms Knox plans to use for its expanded preschool program, and Elementary School Principal Michelle Tarnow has been meeting with other department officials to get state a certification and make it eligible to accept vouchers.
