Pulaski County property taxpayers may be in for a bit of a shock. A tax restructuring approved by the county council last year lowered the local income tax from a state-high 3.38 to 2.85 percent. That involved adjusting how that money is allocated, shifting much of it away from property tax relief.
But County Treasurer Teresa Bryant told the council and commissioners Monday that’s led to quite a big increase in many property tax bills. Now that the bills are going out, she warned that they’re going to have some unhappy taxpayers, especially older residents and those on fixed incomes.
The tax restructuring was seen as a way to help lower the county’s deficit, while also shifting some of the tax burden from wage earners to landowners. Pulaski County had been under a property tax levy freeze for a number of years.
