The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation broke ground on its elementary school addition and renovation project Monday. It will add a 500-seat gym to the south side of the school. The existing gym will then be turned into additional cafeteria space, a multipurpose room, a maker space, a conference room, and a faculty dining room. The school’s HVAC and plumbing systems will be upgraded, and new paint, lighting, and cabinetry are planned for the interior.
Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin recently told the school board that construction will start with the new gym, with interior work to begin over summer break. “Once June 1 gets here – and that is right after Memorial Day – the work will begin in the school building on that west wing,” she explained. “They will be working on that wing first and the main office and then continued work on the new gym.”
In a press release Monday, North Judson-San Pierre officials said they’re “excited to break ground on this project and to continue investing in our school corporation.” Brown and Brown General Contractors of Wakarusa is overseeing the project, totaling just over $6.8 million. The press release notes that it won’t impact the school district’s tax rate.
The entire project is scheduled to be complete by August of 2022. Work is also underway on a new bus garage, along with upgrades to the high school gym.
