One Motorcyclist Killed, Another Injured in Crash in Rural LaPorte County

One motorcyclist is dead and another was hurt, after a crash in rural LaPorte County Saturday. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 4:00 p.m. at the intersection of county roads 400 West and 1000 South.

Deputies believe a group of about 60 motorcyclists were slowing down to turn west onto 1000 South, when one of the motorcyclists toward the end of the group, Nicholas F. Kolosci, 61, of Hobart, swerved left, then right, and then lay the motorcycle down on its passenger side. He was reportedly thrown in front of the motorcycle. Police say the motorcyclist riding behind Kolosci, Robert G. Shepard, 60, of Valparaiso, then collided with Kolosci’s motorcycle and was thrown toward the east side of the roadway.

Both sustained upper body injuries. Kolosci was taken to a hospital for treatment, but Shepard died while being transported. The Sheriff’s Office says toxicology test results are pending.
