Those who sacrificed their lives for their country will be honored this weekend with events throughout the local area. The Knox VFW will once again hold its 24-hour vigil, starting at noon Sunday, following an opening ceremony at 11:30.
Event organizer Ryan Baker told WKVI’s Charlie Adams that it’s a chance to remember what Memorial Day’s all about. “A lot of it is just a time of silent reflection,” Baker said. “I’ve had people that stand there to honor somebody that never made it home. I’ve actually had a couple of friends of mine that I served with, and we’ll stand out there and we’ll just very quietly share stories of our experiences, you know, ‘Hey, remember when we did that in that country?’”
On Monday, the Knox VFW and American Legion posts are scheduled to assemble at the new Starke County Veterans Memorial at the courthouse at 9:00 a.m. before processing to Crown Hill Cemetery. The North Judson American Legion post is expected to hold its annual services at Pioneer Cemetery at 9:00 a.m. and San Pierre Cemetery at 10:00, before depositing a wreath in the Kankakee River at 11:00.
Meanwhile, the Winamac VFW and American Legion will conduct honor guard presentations at a number of Pulaski County cemeteries starting at 9:00 a.m. EDT, according to the American Legion Post 71 Facebook page. That will be followed by the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Pulaski County Courthouse, starting at 11:00.
