A Portage man was taken to jail, following a semi rollover that shut down eastbound U.S. 30 Tuesday for several hours. The eastbound lanes were closed between State Road 39 and U.S. 35, starting before noon.
Starke County Sheriff Bill Dulin says someone called 911 reporting that a semi was unable to maintain its lane. But by the time police got there, the truck had reportedly gone into a ditch, ending up on its side just east of County Road 125 East. That stretch was already down to one lane in each direction, due to road work.
Dulin says the driver, Gary Hampton, 56, wasn’t hurt, but he was taken to the Starke County Jail on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Eastbound U.S. 30 had finally reopened by 7:00 p.m., according to an Indiana Department of Transportation Facebook post.
