The Starke County Park Board is looking to improve the quality of the Bass Lake Beach. Board members recently agreed to request some of the sand removed during Yellow River improvements near Range Road. The only cost would be to pay the County Highway Department to transport the sand to the beach.
“If we could put some sand out there, at least in the area that’s been designated as the beach, the swimming area, that would be very, very nice to start with,” said Board Member Kathy Norem.
County Attorney Marty Lucas noted that no permit would be required, as long as the sand is placed above the ordinary high water mark. They hoped to have the sand installed by Memorial Day.
But it was pointed out that adding sand would do little good, unless the beach is groomed properly. Board Member Rik Ritzler was authorized to rent a grooming machine, for a cost not to exceed $5,000.
