The Town of Winamac will officially dedicate its new splash pad today. A grand opening will be held at noon EDT at the Owen Abbott Memorial Splash Pad near the intersection of Logan and Jefferson streets.
During Thursday’s park board meeting, town manager and board member Brad Zellers said there’s still some landscaping and concrete work to do, but overall, it came out well. “It is neat to take a vision – you know, you put it all on paper what you feel it shall look like – and when it’s done, I think we can put that print on top of it and it’d match perfectly,” Zellers commented.
The splash pad itself is being donated by the family of Owen Abbott, a Winamac Middle School student who was killed in a school bus accident in Marshall County in 2018. The restrooms, shelters, and landscaping are being funded in large part by money raised for the canceled swimming pool project. And Park Board President Chris Schramm notes that a bunch of people have offered to donate other items.
“[The splash pad is] fantastic,” Schramm added. “It is great. I don’t have any complaints. They’re working on it every single day to get that thing going.”
Schramm thanked Abbot’s mom, Britni Fritz, for the donation, the town council for its financial contribution, and Zellers for designing and overseeing the project.
